The solutions for two-dimensional responses of a circular cylindrical cavity in an elastic half-plane are obtained when the cavity is subjected to plane P, SV and Rayleigh waves. To solve the problem, all the incident, reflected and diffracted wave fields are resolved into symmetric and anti-symmetric parts with respect to the vertical axis through the center of the cavity and each part is treated separately. Both symmetric and anti-symmetric parts of the scattered wave fields are expanded into two sequences of line source potentials, namely, compressional and shear source potentials, which are singular along the axis of the cylinder and satisfy the free surface conditions and the radiation conditions at infinity. These line source potentials are expressed in an integral form, in which Chebyshev polynomial is used to represent the strength of source. The remaining traction free conditions along the cavity are satisfied in the least-square sense. Numerical results for the motions on the ground surface and on the wall of the cavity are presented. Comparison of the results with those obtained with boundary element method shows good agreements.
