This article discusses the effort by Pacific Northwest Laboratories to gather design and operations data on hydroelectric stations with turbine-generator units in excess of 25 MWe featuring both Francis and Kaplan turbines. By analyzing this data, they were able to predict a failure rate or probability for various system components. PNL`s methodology is discussed, and the applicability of the study is also noted.
