Activated Carbons have been produced from an Illinois coal with a two and a three step process. The two step process of preoxidation followed by steam gasification was found to be as effective as the conventional three step process of preoxidation, pyrolysis, and activation. Various temperature and pretreatment times, charring temperature, activation temperature and times were investigated. Produced carbons were characterized by carbon dioxide surface area, helium and bulk densities, and toluene adsorption capacities. Toluene adsorption capacities were found to be more than 4 times greater than that of commercially available carbons.
