Title: Practical approaches to the analysis of PCDD/DF and other SVOC in air emissions

EPA Method 0023A proposes some material changes from EPA 23 analytical methodology. In particular, the method requires analysis of both the front half (probe rinses and filter) and the back half (resin and back half glassware rinse) which has a significant impact on project costs. A number of reasons for this requirement are possible. Primarily a lower recovery might be expected from the extraction of spiked isotopically labeled internal standards from a filter/particulate than from a sample of XAD-2 resin. Since native PCDD/DF data are corrected from these recoveries, it is important that the recovery data be representative of the matrix from which native PCDD/DF are extracted. Secondarily, some may consider the two results as representative of particulate and gas phase PCDD/DF. Canada had used this two phased approach for PCDD/DF analysis in air emissions for many years. Results are presented from an extensive data base which show a comparison of recoveries of isotopically labeled internal standards from front and back half matrices, as well as actual native PCDD/DF residues. Other topics will be briefly discussed such as the value of separate toluene rinse analysis and proofing of glassware prior to field sampling. Finally, coincident analysis of other semivolatile organics such as PAH, PCB, chlorinated benzenes and chlorinated phenols from a Method 23 train are presented, with minor, yet important modifications, required to ensure overall data quality, especially for acidic phenols.
