This paper presents a simulation program suitable for the preliminary evaluation of refrigerants and refrigerant mixtures in a vapor compression cycle. The model has been developed to simulate the performance of alternative refrigerants operating in a water-water heat pump test facility used for the testing of new working fluids. The simulation is specific to this heat pump test facility and uses a semi-theoretical cycle analysis to predict steady-state operating conditions at points around the system. The model is used to calculate important performance characteristics, including evaporator capacity, compressor shaft power, refrigerant mass flow, cooling coefficient of performance (COP), etc. A comparative analysis is made on the thermodynamic performance of the heat pump operating with refrigerant HFC-134a. The predicted performances are compared to data obtained experimentally at this laboratory for typical sets of system operating conditions.
