Eastern Rensselaer County Community Warehouse. Final report
The Eastern Rensselaer County Community Warehouse (ERCCW) project was conducted to determine if reuse is a feasible waste-management technology. The project had three phases: determining the feasibility of economically collecting, warehousing, refurbishing, and selling salvageable items from transfer stations, individuals, and businesses located in a rural area; preparing an operational plan; implementing the plan. Project findings suggest that, with proper management, a warehouse for waste reuse is feasible and can be self-sustaining. It also found that reuse results in the short-term saving of landfill capacity, and can provide low-cost goods to residents of rural areas. The study concludes that reuse, through retailing, is a viable waste-management practice. The report has been prepared as a how-to guide for municipalities, organizations, and individuals interested in reducing landfill waste and in establishing a reuse/recycling facility. Questions to consider, resources, and an overview of the ERCCW project are provided.
