Oil companies focus on health care for remote operations
Oil companies are taking a hard look at the effects of employee health on overall corporate standing. Of special interest is the health of workers stationed in remote locations, such as offshore production platforms, where access to health care is limited. A healthy work force not only saves money, but also increases productivity. Health issues were a major focus at the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Inc.`s third international conference on health, safety, and environment in oil and gas exploration and production, held June 9--12 in New Orleans. A round-up of some of the important papers presented at this meeting explains: difficulties associated with work in remote environments; guidelines for health facilities in remote locations; and programs instituted by oil companies to improve worker health. The paper discusses the dangerous environment of remote operations, remote care guidelines, equipment and facilities, on-site care, a comprehensive system, a remote care system, offshore visits, and recommendations.
