Recent experimental results of Chinese 25 MWt coal-fired MHD generator are presented here. The peak power output has reached up to 119.7 kW and the continuous generating duration has been one hour. It is shown that a better performance is resulted by the improvements of the generator channel structure to a great extent, in particular, the utilization of the ceramic-capped elements. The discrepancy between the experiment and the design calculation in gasdynamics is indicated and its possible reasons are discussed. The plasma conductivity deduced based on experimental data is still lower than the predicted one, and so is the total Hall voltage across the channel longitudinally. The low conductivity could be caused by the excess slag carryover through the channel and the incompleteness of the combustion. And, the low longitudinal Hall voltage could be considered due to the unsatisfactory axial insulation. No effects of axial leakage of the cathode wall has been observed yet. Also, though the reliable operation of the hardware has been proved, a further investigation and relevant approaches for getting a steady power generation should be needed, which would depend upon the stability of the coal feeding as well as the combustion mainly. In summary, the further enhancement of the performance of this generator channel seems to be possible if the described problems above could be resolved.
