Title: DFBR design study on RV and IHX plenum structure from the point of thermal transients

Book ·
OSTI ID:248158

Both plenum of reactor vessel (RV) and intermediate heat exchanger (IHX) for Japanese Demonstration Fast Breeder Reactor (DFBR) has free surface, therefore, the cover gas entrainment behavior during the operation and the sloshing behavior in the earthquake condition are concerned for the reactor feasibility. So, it is important to modify the structure which are placed in the plenum in order to reduce these phenomena influence. The structure for which plan is to be adopted is the Porous Type UIS or Ring Type plate for RV and the Baffle plate for IHX. This paper presents the experimental results of the structural trade-off study for which type of structure has an advantage regarding the thermal transient conditions. The test has been proceeded by using 1/10 scale model with water. And the results of 1-D flow-network analysis was also confirmed. The summary of the results are as follows; (1) the porous type UIS in the RV plenum has an advantage to reduce the temperature difference which should be occurred during the thermal transient; (2) the adoption of the baffle plate in IHX plenum have a tendency to increase the temperature difference; (3) the 1-D flow-network analysis shows the sufficient results for RV plenum temperature behavior calculation.
