Titanium clad carbon steel and other clad corrosion resistant materials are beginning to be used in some of the more aggressive environments. The cost of providing a component whose full thickness is completely comprised of titanium or some other expensive metal is strictly cost prohibitive. With the advent of new, efficient methods of cladding using titanium, stainless steel, high nickel, and inconel type materials, processes such as roll bonding, explosive welding, and weld overlay are gaining rapid acceptance and use. However, the use of these relatively new forming and joining processes is not without complications. Discontinuities that had not previously been experienced are being identified. They require qualitative and quantitative analysis to determine their impact on the use and life expectancy of a component or system. Nondestructive testing is one means to accomplish the qualification of some items. This article provides an introduction to explosive welded clad plate and subsequent testing.
