Federal agencies administer more than 31 percent of the land in the United States, much of it in the western states and Alaska, Many of these areas are remote and environmentally sensitive. This represents an opportunity for photovoltaic power systems. The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has enetered into partnerships four agencies that have the responsibility to administer the land. These agencies include the Department of Defense, the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the U.S. Forest Service. The goal includes assessments to determine what has been done with photovoltaics, the satisfaction of programs, and the potential for expansion.
