A study recently completed for EPRI examines four variations of advanced pressurized fluidized-bed combustion (PFBC) facilities dealing with both size and configuration. This study is part of a multi-phased engineering and economic evaluation of PFBC systems sponsored by EPRI. The study was performed by Bechtel and was based on Foster Wheeler`s (FW) technology, The other phases of the study have shown that both bubbling-bed and circulating PFBC systems can offer attractive performance and levelized cost of electricity (COE) when compared to other coal based power generation technologies. This study shows advanced PFBC systems have the potential of offering further improvement in both performance and plant economics, The project team examined two sizes of FW`s technology, a nominal 320 MWe base case and an 80 MWe alternative. The second two cases examined a standard PFBC system with a natural gas fired topping combustor. For comparison these systems used the same gas turbine but other factors increased the nominal capacities to 350 MWe and 410 MWe. The two topping cycles were identical except the gas from the PFBC was cooled in the second case prior to hot gas cleaning. All cases were based on a greenfield designs with the sole purpose of providing power to the grid. This paper presents a summary of the technical and economic results developed in the study.
