ZnO/SiO{sub 2} nanocomposite layers are deposited onto glass substrates by the sol-gel method. The fraction of SiO{sub 2} is 20%. The layers are produced by single or double deposition and sol centrifugation. To study the photocatalytic properties of the samples, experiments are performed on the decomposition of Malachite Green oxalate in aqueous solutions under the action of light in the ultra-violet and visible (UV/VIS) spectral ranges. The gas-sensitive properties of the layers are examined by impedance spectroscopy in various gas atmospheres. In all experiments, double-layer ZnO/SiO2 nanocomposites exhibit a higher efficiency, compared with the rest of the samples, irrespective of the irradiation type. The double-layer samples also show the best sensitivity to acetone and isopropanol vapors.
