Investigation of the equation of state of molybdenum diboride (MoB{sub 2}) has been performed to 24.1 GPa using synchrotron radiation angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction techniques (ADXRD) in a diamond anvil cell (DAC) at room temperature. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray powder diffraction data reveals that the rhombohedral structure MoB{sub 2} is stable up to 24.1 GPa. The ADXRD data yield a bulk modulus K{sub 0} = 314(11) GPa with a pressure derivative K{sub 0}{sup ′} = 6.4(1.5). The experimental data are discussed and compared to the results of first-principles calculations. In addition, the compressibility of the unit cell axes (a and c axes) of MoB{sub 2} demonstrates an anisotropic property with pressure increasing.
