Title: The impact study of a dam in a hydropower project

Abstract

Due to the steepness in terrain and the non-uniform distribution of rainfall, the development of water resources is always an important issue in Taiwan. Large number of dams, reservoirs and mobile barrages have been implemented in rivers for water resources and hydropower development, which will require a similar tendency in the future aspect. These hydraulic structures make more or less environmental and ecological impacts to the regions, due to few concerns about environmental impact assessment prior to the construction of these structures. In order to mitigate or reduce the environmental impacts caused by these projects, quantitative assessment of the impacts and environmental protection facilities are essential. A case study, which is a dam built for the purpose of hydropower generation and water supply, is presented in this paper. The construction of this dam will cause the discontinuity of sediment transport in the corresponding river and will also form an obstruction to migratory fishes from migrating to upstream for spawning or breeding. A quantitative impact assessment of the sediment problem is performed by numerical flow simulations as well as hydraulic model test. A passing facility for fish migration is also provided in this dam for the purpose of mitigating environmental impact.
