A thorough understanding of the flow field and associated phenomena around a mechanical-draft air-cooled heat exchanger (ACHE) is important for the optimal design of such a system. One of these phenomena, hot air or plume recirculation, has long been recognized as a problem that could adversely affect the ability of an ACHE to reject waste heat. The influence of recirculating warm plume air on the performance of mechanical-draft air-cooled heat exchangers under windless conditions is investigated. An empirical correlation, numerically derived, is presented with which the performance effectiveness due to recirculation in an air-cooled heat exchanger can be predicted. This correlation is compared with experimental results and an analytical model.
