Bismuth-doped optical fibres fully compatible with standard telecommunication fibres are developed. Lasers based on such fibres emitting in the spectral range 1430-1500 nm with an efficiency of up to 7.6% at room temperature and up to 10.5% at a temperature of -65{sup 0}C are fabricated.
