Abstract

Plentiful coal and cheap energy prices have resulted in an unusually heavy carbon footprint. Clearly, Australia has to rethink how much coal it will use to feed its own growing economy while becoming more conscious of its significant carbon export problem. For a country long used to digging the coal out of the ground and shipping it overseas, climate change will be a game changer.

This paper examines the implications of statements by Australia's Minister of Resources that Australia's exports of coal are growing rapidly and that Australia's coal will last '110 years at current rates of production.' During the lat fiscal year, Australia produced 71,000,000 metric tons of coal. Almost 38,000,000 tons were exported. Australia is the world's third largest coal exporting nation and current development of coal mines, preparation plants, rail, and port facilities will ensure that Australia consolidates its position as a major world coal supplier.
