Abstract

Turbulence properties of communication links (optical and microwave) in terms of log-amplitude variance are studied on the basis of a three-layer model of refractive index fluctuation spectrum in the free atmosphere. We suggest a model of turbulence spectra (Kolmogorov and non-Kolmogorov) changing with altitude on the basis of obtained experimental and theoretical data for turbulence profile in the troposphere and lower stratosphere.

Models of planetary wave propagation in the middle atmosphere

Linear steady-state models were used to study the propagation of quasi-stationary planetary waves through zonally symmetric basic states with both meridional and vertical wind shears. Simulations from a comprehensive general circulation model were analyzed to provide realistic basic state and forcing. A quasi-geostrophic and a primitive-equation model were constructed. The models were found to give very different results when the Rossby number of the mean flow is large (around 0.4). The quasi-geostrophic model tends to give larger amplitude and longer vertical wavelength than the primitive-equation model. Modelling atmospheric turbulence effects on ground-based telescope systems

Questions still exist concerning the appropriate model for turbulence- induced phase fluctuations seen in ground-based telescopes. Bester et al. used a particular observable (slope of the Allan variance) with an infrared interferometer in an attempt to distinguish models. The authors have calculated that observable for Kolmogorov and {open_quotes}random walk{close_quotes} models with a variety of outer scales and altitude-dependent turbulence and wind velocity. The authors have found that clear distinction between models requires good data on the vertical distribution of wind and turbulence. Extinction of turbulent diffusion flames by Kolmogorov microscale turbulence

The effects of turbulent straining on the structure and response of cylindrical diffusion flames were studied experimentally by using the counterflow flame configuration formed in the forward stagnation region of a porous cylinder from which propane or methane was ejected. From the shadowgraphs, it was found that the turbulence caused large-scale distortions with small amplitude on a diffusion flame which had a locally laminar structure. A model of the electron density irregularities in the Jovian ionosphere is constructed based on a preliminary interpretation of the Pioneer 10 Jovian ionospheric scintillations. The ionospheric irregularities exist over an altitude range of 3000 km. The structure constant c/sub n/ of refractive index fluctuations is constant throughout this altitude range. The spatial wavenumber spectrum of the electron density irregularities follows the Kolmogorov spectrum, and the outer scale size is greater than 6 km. Estimates of scintillation for a Jovian entry probe based on this model indicate that it is small at S-band but could be substantial at 4000 MHz.more »« less
