Iron (III) rich pigments MgFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} and ZnFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} spinel ferrites and {alpha}-Fe{sub 2}O{sub 3} hematite were synthesized by Pechini route and precipitation process, respectively. The compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Moessbauer spectroscopy and visible-NIR spectroscopy. Diffuse reflectance spectra were interpreted in regard of structural features of the three oxides in order to correlate absorption bands positions with structural parameters. It has been demonstrated that the two main absorption edges occurring in visible range (400-800 nm) can be attributed to two 2p(O{sup 2-}){yields}3d(Fe{sup 3+}) charge transfers, the energy being directly linked to the distortion degree of the [FeO{sub 6}] octahedra. - Graphical abstract: UV-visible-NIR reflectance of iron red pigments: MgFe{sub 2}O{sub 4}, ZnFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} spinels and Fe{sub 2}O{sub 3} hematite, were analyzed in regard of their structural features: cationic distribution, geometry of the Fe{sup 3+} sites, iono-covalence of the bonds.
