The chemistry of various Ziegler-Natta zirconocene complexes have been extensively studied in solution to determine the effects of ancillary ligands upon their ability to polymerize olefins. The study of the gas phase reactions allows mechanistic information to be obtained concerning the metal-olefin interaction in the absence of secondary effects due to solvation and ion pairing with the counterion. In an ongoing investigation of the gas phase reactions and kinetics of metallocene complexes, the reactions of [(C{sub 5}Me{sub 4})SiMe{sub 2}(N-t-Bu)]ZrMe{sup +} with ethylene have been studied with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS). It was expected that the open metal coordination center resulting from the silicon bridging and amide coordinating ligand would lead to an enhanced reactivity over related complexes.
