The inverse problem in IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) consists in finding a set of radiation parameters based on the conditions given by the radiation therapist. The dimensionality of such problem usually depends on the number of bixels in which each radiation field is divided. Recently, the efforts have been put on finding arrangements of small segments (subfields) irradiating uniformly. In this paper a deterministic algorithm which allows to find solutions given a maximal number of segments is proposed. The procedure consists of two parts. In the first part the segments are chosen based on the irradiation geometry defined by the therapist. In the second part, the radiation intensity of the segments is optimized using standard optimization algorithms. Results are presented. Computational times were reduced and the final fluence maps were less complex without significantly sacrifying clinical value.
