Abstract

The excess of data on the total cross section of bb production in {gamma}{gamma} collisions over QCD predictions, observed by L3, OPAL and DELPHI Collaborations at LEP2, has so far defied explanation. The recent final analysis of L3 data has brought important new information concerning the dependence of the observed excess on the {gamma}{gamma} collisions energy W{sub {gamma}}{sub {gamma}}. The implications of this dependence are discussed.

The inclusive production of heavy quarks and quarkonia in photon-photon collisions at the LEP2 collider is considered within the semihard (k{sub T}-factorization) QCD approach. The dependence of the total and differential cross sections for the production of heavy (c and b) quarks and D* and J/{psi} mesons on the choice of unintegrated gluon distribution is studied. The transition of a cc-bar charmed pair to observed J/{psi} mesons is described on the basis of the color-singlet model. Towards understanding bb-bar production in {gamma}{gamma} collisions

The data on the total cross section {sigma}{sub tot}(e{sup +}e{sup -}{yields}e{sup +}e{sup -}bb-bar) measured at LEP2 represent a serious challenge for perturbative QCD. In order to understand the origin of the excess of data over QCD calculations, we investigate the dependence of the four contributions to this cross section on {gamma}{gamma} collision energy. As the reliability of the existing calculations of {sigma}{sub tot}(e{sup +}e{sup -}{yields}e{sup +}e{sup -}bb-bar) depends, among other things, on the stability of the calculations of the cross section {sigma}{sub tot}({gamma}{gamma}{yields}bb-bar) with respect to variations of the renormalization and factorization scales, we investigate this aspect in detail. Four-jet production at LEP2

Journal Article Bright-Thomas, Paul - AIP Conference Proceedings

A selection of four-jet events from ALEPH data at 133 GeV revealed an excess of data over Standard Model expectation, and a strong clustering in the di-jet mass sum distribution close to 105 GeV/c{sup 2}. Only one event had more that one jet tagged as a b-quark, disfavouring hA production as an explanation. However, kinematic and jet-charge properties of the events did not appear consistent with QCD expectation. Including data collected in 1996 at energies of 161 and 172 GeV, ALEPH observed 18 events in the range 106{+-}5 GeV/c{sup 2}, for an expectation of 3.1 from Standard Model processes. Constraints on the Z-Z Prime mixing angle from data measured for the process e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} W{sup +}W{sup -} at the LEP2 collider

An analysis of effects induced by new neutral gauge Z Prime bosons was performed on the basis of data from the OPAL, DELPHI, ALEPH, and L3 experiments devoted to measuring differential cross sections for the process of the annihilation production of pairs of charged gauge W{sup {+-}} bosons at the LEP2 collider. By using these experimental data, constraints on the Z Prime -boson mass and on the angle of Z-Z Prime mixing were obtained for a number of extended gauge models.

Implications for supersymmetry of the reported deviations from the standard model for {Gamma}({ital Z}{r_arrow}{bar {ital bb}}) and {alpha}{sub {ital s}}({ital m}{sup 2}{sub {ital Z}})

If the reported excess (over the standard model prediction) for {ital Z}{r_arrow}{bar {ital bb}} from LEP persists, and is explained by supersymmetric particles in loops, then we show that (1) a superpartner (chargino and/or stop) will be detected at LEP2, and probably at intermediate energy upgrades, (2) the basic parameter tan{beta} is at its lower perturbative limit, (3) BR({ital t}{r_arrow}{tilde {ital t}}{sub 1}+{tilde {chi}}{sup 0}) is at or above 0.4, (4) the upper limit on {ital m}{sub {ital h}} is considerably reduced, and (5) several important consequences arise for the form of a unified supersymmetric theory.
