While a few CO{sub 2} floods operate without special attention to corrosion inhibition, most will experience corrosion problems and failures without special programs. This article discusses the chemical and physical forces at work in CO{sub 2}-flood downhole corrosion, the type of testing needed to identify effective inhibitors for this environment, the improvements offered by newer chemistries, and the importance of application techniques. The change in corrosive tendencies that occurs over time as a CO{sub 2}-flood well is produced also is discussed.
