Title: AMTEC materials development and post test analysis

Abstract

Alkali Metal Thermal-to-Electric Converter (AMTEC) cells are currently being built and tested for terrestrial and space applications. It is important to determine the effects of cell operation on critical components so that materials and designs can be optimized to provide maximum cell life. Post test analysis (PTA) is an important part of the process but must be conducted with care because of the reactive nature of residual sodium and the difficulty of cutting the thin-wall containment and handling the internal components. PTA involves dissection of the cell, determination of sodium distribution and its removal, and evaluation of the post-operational condition of all major components. The data collected play a vital role in verifying life prediction models. This paper describes the techniques that have been developed for complete cell disassembly. The importance of PTA is illustrated through selected component problems that have been encountered and resolved through the test program.
