Proton radiation therapy: A summary of the world wide experience

There are sixteen operating proton therapy centers world-wide in 1994. By January 1994, proton beams had been used to treat {approximately}13,000 patients world-wide for both benign and malignant disease. Six centers are located in Europe, four in the United States, three in Russia, two in Japan and one in South Africa. Most of these sixteen centers use accelerators originally designed for other purposes and adapted for proton radiation therapy, with only one center having an accelerator designed and built for the hospital environment. Six centers have accelerators with maximum energy of <100 MeV, so that only selected sites can be treated. Six centers can provide proton beams of variable energy and all use passive scattering techniques to spread the beam in the lateral dimension. Data will be presented showing the types of accelerators and beam delivery systems used and the world-wide clinical experience will be summarized.
