The three-dimensional, constant panel program NEPTUNE is utilized to study the influence of body discretization in the diffraction analysis of large displacement ocean structures. The ISSC TLP structure is considered, numerical results are presented for the added mass, radiation damping and exciting force coefficients, and mean drift loads and wave runup at selected locations on the structure. Three different mesh configurations involving approximately 400, 500 and 900 panels were utilized. For comparison purposes, a uniform panel distribution on the TLP column was adopted. It is found that although the hydrodynamic quantities are strongly dependent on panel size, sufficiently accurate estimates for engineering purposes may be obtained utilizing panel meshes involving on the order of 1,000 panels.
