Progress and problems recharging zinc/manganese dioxide cells
- Eagle-Cliffs, Inc., Cleveland, OH (United States)
The purpose of ongoing studies has been to (1) test zinc/manganese dioxide alkaline cells available commercially in electric vehicle load cycles and (2) to find improved combinations of chemical formulas and constructions for rechargeable Leclanche cells. Eventually it is envisioned that load-leveling capacitors, flywheels or battery assist with such batteries might be useful in medium-range electric vehicles. Surprisingly it has been found that the alkaline cells have greater pulse capability for a given capacity than envisioned, apparently because the shorter diffusion distances in smaller cells improve efficiency at the same time as the pulse capability is improved. For the Leclanche cells, studies continue to improve actual dendrite inhibitor performance in cells. Combinations are being sought which do not reduce cathode performance. Other cathode requirements continue to be the use of manganese dioxide without a pyrolusite content, but including an expander and a charge reserve chemical as well as the usual carbon black. Where economic designs are very critical for commercial success, the zinc/manganese dioxide chemistries continue to offer promise of the capability of competing with better-known alternatives for large size practical battery power units.
