Based on digitized maps describing phytomass, detritus and production by Bazilevich, forest vegetational regionalization by Kurnaev, statistic and scientific data from scientific institutes of the former Soviet Union (FSU), the influence of the terrestrial biota on the carbon budget has been estimated for the conditions in the 1990s. The forests of the FSU are estimated to constitute a net annual sink of 460 million tons/year, of which 50 million tons are fixed in long-lived forest products. According to a scenario which the authors developed for this study, a long-term sequestration of 900 million tons C/year during the first 100 years after implementation of the scenario may possibly be achieved. 111 refs., 5 tabs.
