Jacking to correct out-of-roundness of a ring-stiffened vessel

A new, 27-foot diameter, 1-1/2 inch thick pressure vessel was found to exceed ASME Section VIII, Div. 1, out-of-roundness tolerances. The vessel was already erected in the field but had not been placed in operation. The owner required that the out-of-roundness of the vessel be brought within Code limits before putting it into service. Complicating the process was the fact that the vessel has large reinforcing ring vacuum stiffeners. The vessel was rounded by application of radial loads, pushing out from within the vessel, using hydraulic jacks. The reinforcing rings were left on the vessel during the process. Prior to the correction work, elastic-plastic finite element analyses of the vessel were performed to evaluate its response to the jacking procedures. These analyses, verified by field experience, provide insight into how ring stiffened vessels respond to the diametral jacking.
