In Germany, a large number of sites exist where ammunition was produced before and in particular during World War II. These former production sites represent a particular threat to the environment because these plants were constructed and operated under war conditions, where production was far more important than protection of the health of the (in general forced) workers and the environment. New approaches are presented for the extraction and analysis of explosives and related compounds in aqueous samples from former ammunition production sites. Quantitative extraction of nitro aromatics but also of the polar nitroamines such as RDX and HMX is achieved by solid phase extraction with styrene-divinylbenzene polymers (Lichrolut EN). Proton nuclear magnetic resonance ({sup 1}H-NMR) has been used to identify and quantify unknowns in ammunition waste water. Finally, automated multiple development (AMD) high performance thin layer chromatography was applied for the first time to the analysis of this compound class.
