Research and development was conducted in order to improve the performance of the polymeric outdoor termination. As a result, a highly reliable polymeric termination has been developed. The critically important factor in the long-term reliability and in particular the weatherability of an outdoor termination is the performance of the covering insulation of the termination. This research examined the basic performance requirements of the termination insulator and selected stringent methods of testing the material and verifying its characteristics. This research confirmed that tracking resistance is enhanced when an anti-tracking agent consisting mainly of alumina trihydrate (Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}{center_dot}3H{sub 2}O) is added to silicone. In order to upgrade the performance reliability of an outdoor termination, the weather shed design of termination insulator was considered. A termination insulator which has a temple bell design weather shed is more effective at reducing the leakage current when there is significant contamination than the existing horizontal shed design.
