Abstract

Early in 1990, the Yucca Mountain Project Office (Project Office; presently the Yucca Mountain Site Characterization Project Office) of the US DOE completed two prototype boreholes at Apache Leap, Arizona, to test dry drilling and coring techniques that will be used during site characterization activities at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Staff of the Sample Management Facility (SMF), Technical and Management Support Services contractor, used the boreholes to test sample handling and geologic logging procedures. Results of this testing indicate that modifications to approved Project Office procedures will be necessary before site characterization commences. These modifications include reduction of paperwork, verification of drill depths, upgrade of equipment, and enhanced training of SMF field staff.

Characterization data for water and air properties of variably saturated rocks are required for evaluation of the candidate high-level nuclear waste disposal site at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, as well as for municipal, toxic, and hazardous waste sites situated in variably saturated fractured rock elsewhere. Field and laboratory methods for estimating and interpreting parameters obtained from field borehole and laboratory core experiments are examined using permeability data interpreted from air and water injection tests in variably saturated fractured tuff at the Apache Leap Tuff Site in central Arizona. Simulation of liquid and vapor movement in unsaturated fractured rock at the Apache Leap Tuff Site: Models and strategies

The physical, hydraulic and pneumatic properties of variably saturated, fractuerd tuff are currently being evaluated at the Apache Leap Tuff Site, located near Superior, Arizona. Nine inclined boreholes, the deepest of which penetrate to a depth of thirty meters, have yielded over 270 m of oriented core.
