  1. HIsmelt Corp. Pty. Ltd., Kwinana, Western Australia (Australia)

Four campaigns have been completed at the HIsmelt Research and Development Facility (HRDF) from the commencement of operations in October, 1993 through November, 1994. The stand-alone HIsmelt facility, located at Kwinana, Western Australia, is a coal based, integrated ironworks equipped to process iron ore fines into pig iron by utilizing a unique, molten iron bath smelting technology. With a design capacity of 100,000 t/y of hot metal, the HRDF represents a scale-up of approximately 8:1 over the Small Scale Pilot Plant (SSPP) which was in operation at Maxhuette steelworks in southern Germany from 1984 to 1990. The data generated from operations thus far has been used to demonstrate the potential of the process technology, as well as to verify scale-up of the central core plant smelting unit. Preliminary investigations into process intensification using pressurization and oxygen enrichment of the hot air blast (HAB) have also been conducted, and top ore has been successfully injected from above the bath.
