The role of the ASPO Hard Rock Laboratory in the Swedish Deep Repository Programme

The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB) plans to start deposition of spent fuel within about 15 years. SKB is constructing the Aspo Hard Rock Laboratory for research and development in a realistic and undisturbed underground rock environment down to the depth planned for the future deep repository. This paper outlines characterization of the laboratory site in the pre- and initial-construction phases, and identifies remaining characterization issues. An overview of the main tests performed and planned is provided.
