Predictive modeling of the transport of trivalent rare earth and actinide elements in the geosphere is difficult as the mechanism of lanthanide sorption in natural systems is not well understood. Experimental data demonstrating rare earth sorption to soil components under environmentally realistic conditions is lacking. In this presentation, we report on the competitive effects of the presence of a major cation, Ca(II), on the sorption of Eu(III) to goethite. pH sorption edges and isotherms will be presented for both of these elements. Variables considered are ionic strength as well as Ca(II) and Eu(III) concentrations. Finally, mechanisms of lanthanide sorption will be discussed.
