Title: Selected spectroscopic results on element 115 decay chains

Abstract

We observed thirty correlated α-decay chains in an experiment studying the fusion-evaporation reaction 48Ca + 243Am at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung. The decay characteristics of the majority of these 30 chains are consistent with previous observations and interpretations of such chains to originate from isotopes of element Z = 115. High-resolution α-photon coincidence spectroscopy in conjunction with comprehensive Monte-Carlo simulations allow to propose excitation schemes of atomic nuclei of the heaviest elements, thereby probing nuclear structure models near the 'Island of Stability' with unprecedented experimental precision.

Contrary to this interpretation, we suggest that some of these recoil--fission decay chains, as well as some of the recoil--fission and recoil-α-fission decay chains reported from Berkeley and in this article, start from the 3n-evaporation channel 288 115.</span><a href='#' onclick='$(this).hide().prev().hide().prev().show();return false;' style='margin-left:10px;display:none;'>« less</a></div><div class="metadata-links small clearfix text-muted" style="margin-top:15px;"> <span class="fa fa-book text-muted" aria-hidden="true"></span> Cited by 44<div class="pure-menu pure-menu-horizontal pull-right" style="width:unset;"> <ul class="pure-menu-list"> <li class="pure-menu-item"><span class="item-info-ftlink"><a class="misc doi-link " href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.nuclphysa.2016.04.025" target="_blank" rel="noopener" title="Link to document DOI" data-ostiid="1332816" data-product-type="Journal Article" data-product-subtype="AM" >https://doi.org/10.1016/j.nuclphysa.2016.04.025</a></span></li> <li class="pure-menu-item"><span class="item-info-ftlink"><a class="misc fulltext-link " href="/servlets/purl/1332816" title="Link to document media" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-ostiid="1332816" data-product-type="Journal Article" data-product-subtype="AM" >Full Text Available</a></span></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> <div class="clearfix"></div> </div> </li> <li> <div class="article item document" itemprop="itemListElement" itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/WebPage"><meta itemprop="position" content="7" /><div class="item-info"> <h2 class="title" itemprop="name headline"><a href="/biblio/1393336" itemprop="url">Decay spectroscopy of element 115 daughters: <math> <mrow> <mmultiscripts> <mi> Rg </mi><mprescripts/><none/> <mn> 280 </mn> </mmultiscripts> <mo> → </mo> <mmultiscripts> <mi> Mt </mi><mprescripts/><none/> <mn> 276 </mn> </mmultiscripts> </mrow> </math> and <math> <mrow> <mmultiscripts> <mi> Mt </mi><mprescripts/><none/> <mn> 276 </mn> </mmultiscripts> <mo> → </mo> <mmultiscripts> <mi> Bh </mi><mprescripts/><none/> <mn> 272 </mn> </mmultiscripts> </mrow> </math></a></h2> <div class="metadata"> <small class="text-muted" style="text-transform:uppercase;display:block;line-height:2.5em;">Journal Article</small><span class="authors"> <span class="author">Gates, J.</span>; <span class="author">Gregorich, K.</span>; <span class="author">Gothe, O.</span>; <span class="author">...</span> <span class="text-muted pubdata"> - Physical Review C, Nuclear Physics</span> </span></div> <div class="abstract">In this study, forty-six decay chains, assigned to the decay of <sup>288</sup>115, were produced using the <sup>243</sup>Am (<sup>48</sup>Ca, 3n) <sup>288</sup>115 reaction at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory 88-in. cyclotron. The resulting series of α decays were studied using α-photon and α-x-ray spectroscopies. Multiple α-photon coincidences were observed in the element 115 decay chain members, particularly in the third- and fourth-generation decays (presumed to be <sup>280</sup>Rg and <sup>276</sup>Mt, respectively). Upon combining these data with those from 22 <sup>288</sup>115 decay chains observed in a similar experiment, updated level schemes in <sup>276</sup>Mt and <sup>272</sup>Bh (populated by the α decay of <sup>280</sup>Rg and <sup>276</sup>Mt,<a href='#' onclick='$(this).hide().next().show().next().show();return false;' style='margin-left:10px;'>more »</a><span style='display:none;'> respectively) are proposed. Additionally, photons were observed in the energy range expected for K x rays coincident with the α decay of both <sup>280</sup>Rg and <sup>276</sup>Mt. However, Compton scattering of higher-energy γ rays and discrete transitions are present in the K x-ray region preventing a definitive Z identification to be made based on observation of characteristic K x-ray energies.</span><a href='#' onclick='$(this).hide().prev().hide().prev().show();return false;' style='margin-left:10px;display:none;'>« less</a></div><div class="metadata-links small clearfix text-muted" style="margin-top:15px;"> <span class="fa fa-book text-muted" aria-hidden="true"></span> Cited by 48<div class="pure-menu pure-menu-horizontal pull-right" style="width:unset;"> <ul class="pure-menu-list"> <li class="pure-menu-item"><span class="item-info-ftlink"><a class="misc doi-link " href="https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.92.021301" target="_blank" rel="noopener" title="Link to document DOI" data-ostiid="1393336" data-product-type="Journal Article" data-product-subtype="AM" >https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.92.021301</a></span></li> <li class="pure-menu-item"><span class="item-info-ftlink"><a class="misc fulltext-link " href="/servlets/purl/1393336" title="Link to document media" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-ostiid="1393336" data-product-type="Journal Article" data-product-subtype="AM" >Full Text Available</a></span></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> <div class="clearfix"></div> </div> </li> </ul> </aside> </div> </section> </div> <div class="col-sm-3 order-sm-3"> <ul class="nav nav-stacked"> <li class="active"><a class="tab-nav disabled" data-tab="related" style="color: #636c72 !important; opacity: 1;"><span class="fa fa-angle-right"></span> Similar Records</a></li> </ul> </div> </div> </section> </div></div> </div> </div> </section> <footer class="" style="background-color:#f9f9f9; /* padding-top: 0.5rem; */"> <div class="footer-minor"> <div class="container"> <hr class="footer-separator" /> <div class="text-center" style="margin-top:1.25rem;"> <div class="pure-menu pure-menu-horizontal"> <ul class="pure-menu-list" id="footer-org-menu"> <li class="pure-menu-item d-block d-inline-small"> <a href="https://energy.gov" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <img src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAP///wAAACH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAICRAEAOw==" class="sprite sprite-footer-us-doe-min" alt="U.S. Department of Energy" /> </a> </li> <li class="pure-menu-item d-block d-inline-small"> <a href="https://www.energy.gov/science/office-science" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> <img src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAP///wAAACH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAICRAEAOw==" class="sprite sprite-footer-office-of-science-min" alt="Office of Science" /> </a> </li> <li class="pure-menu-item d-block d-inline-small"> <a href="/"> <img src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAP///wAAACH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAICRAEAOw==" class="sprite sprite-footer-osti-min" alt="Office of Scientific and Technical Information" /> </a> </li> </ul> </div> </div> <div class="text-center small" style="margin-top:0.5em;margin-bottom:2.0rem;"> <div class="pure-menu pure-menu-horizontal"> <ul class="pure-menu-list"> <li class="pure-menu-item"><a href="/disclaim" class="pure-menu-link"><span class="fa fa-institution"></span> Website Policies <span class="d-none d-sm-inline" style="color:#737373;">/ Important Links</span></a></li> <li class="pure-menu-item"><a href="/contact" class="pure-menu-link"><span class="fa fa-comments-o"></span> Contact Us</a></li> <li class="d-block d-md-none mb-1"></li> <li class="pure-menu-item"><a href="https://doe.responsibledisclosure.com/hc/en-us" target="_blank" class="pure-menu-link">Vulnerability Disclosure Program</a></li> <li class="d-block d-lg-none mb-1"></li> <li class="pure-menu-item"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/ostigov" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="pure-menu-link social"><span class="fa fa-facebook"></span><span class="sr-only">Facebook</span></a></li> <li class="pure-menu-item"><a href="https://twitter.com/OSTIgov" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="pure-menu-link social"><span class="fa fa-twitter"></span><span class="sr-only">Twitter</span></a></li> <li class="pure-menu-item"><a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/ostigov" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="pure-menu-link social"><span class="fa fa-youtube-play"></span><span class="sr-only">YouTube</span></a></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </footer> <link href="/css/ostigov.fonts.240327.0425.css" rel="stylesheet"> <script src="/js/ostigov.240327.0425.js"></script><noscript></noscript> <script defer src="/js/ostigov.biblio.240327.0425.js"></script><noscript></noscript> <script async type="text/javascript" src="/js/Universal-Federated-Analytics-Min.js?agency=DOE" id="_fed_an_ua_tag"></script><noscript></noscript> </body> <!-- OSTI.GOV v.240327.0425 --> </html>
