Tin metal oxides SnO_x (x = 1, 2) have gained interest as gas-sensing materials. For their applications as high-temperature sensors, however, a better understanding of their temperature dependence sensing responses is needed. Here, we comparatively quantify the temperature-dependent electronic band gaps and optical properties of SnO₂ and SnO using first-principles calculations. Without considering the temperature effect, SnO₂ and SnO are predicted to have direct and indirect band gaps of 2.18 and 1.66 eV, respectively, at the PBE + U-GGA level that we employed. Energy transfer to erbium ions from wide-band-gap SnO{sub 2} nanocrystals in silica

We give the spectroscopic evidence of energy transfer to erbium ions provided by SnO{sub 2} nanocrystals in silica. The spectral and time resolved analysis of the nanocluster luminescence resonant with Er{sup 3+} transitions demonstrates that erbium ions take part to energy-transfer mechanisms with an efficiency of about 20%. The spectral features of erbium emission excited by energy transfer allow to ascribe it to Er{sup 3+} sites in ordered environments, nearby crystalline tin-dioxide nanoclusters.

Strain-induced optical band gap variation of SnO₂ films

In this paper, thickness dependent strain relaxation effects are utilized to study the impact of crystal anisotropy on the optical band gap of epitaxial SnO₂ films grown by pulsed laser deposition on (0001)-oriented sapphire substrates. An X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that all films are under tensile biaxial in-plane strain and that strain relaxation occurs with increasing thickness. Variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry shows that the optical band gap of the SnO₂ films continuously increases with increasing film thickness. Hybrid functional band gap calculation of SnO{sub 6} containing perovskites and their derived structures

We have studied the properties of SnO{sub 6} octahedra-containing perovskites and their derived structures using ab initio calculations with different density functionals. In order to predict the correct band gap of the materials, we have used B3LYP hybrid density functional, and the results of B3LYP were compared with those obtained using the local density approximation and generalized gradient approximation data. The calculations have been conducted for the orthorhombic ground state of the SnO{sub 6} containing perovskites. Structure and optical band gaps of (Ba,Sr)SnO{sub 3} films grown by molecular beam epitaxy

Epitaxial growth of (Ba{sub x}Sr{sub 1−x})SnO{sub 3} films with 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 using molecular beam epitaxy is reported. It is shown that SrSnO{sub 3} films can be grown coherently strained on closely lattice and symmetry matched PrScO{sub 3} substrates. The evolution of the optical band gap as a function of composition is determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry. The direct band gap monotonously decreases with x from to 4.46 eV (x = 0) to 3.36 eV (x = 1). A large Burnstein-Moss shift is observed with La-doping of BaSnO{sub 3} films. The shift corresponds approximately to the increase in Fermi level and is consistent with the low conduction band mass.
