The friction resistance between rack supports and a pool floor liner plays an important role in the description of the dynamic motion behavior of free standing spent fuel storage racks submerged in water within a pool. The effects of varying the Coulomb friction coefficient was investigated on the dynamic response of a typical rack module subjected to three dimensional seismic floor excitations. The rack, fuel bundle, adjacent racks and pool wall, and surrounding water are hydrodynamically coupled. The fluid-structure interaction (FSI) induced is included in the nonlinear dynamic time history analysis using the added-hydrodynamic-mass concept based on potential theory per the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) acceptance criteria. The rack module is described using a three dimensional (3-D) stick finite element model including the possible dynamic behavior of the impacts of fuel-rack, rack-rack, and rack-pool wall, the tilting or uplift and the frictional sliding of the rack supports, and the frictional sliding of the rack supports, and the impacts of the rack supports to the pool floor. Some response results for two typical friction coefficients are presented and discussed in a more quantitative manner.
