Title: Determining the clean-up radius of a soil-vapor extraction well: A computer modeling study

Over the past decade soil-vapor extraction (SVE) has become the remedial technology of choice at many sites with soils impacted by volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Although SVE systems operating at most remediation sites are used to remove petroleum derivatives from highly permeable soils, SVE is now increasingly being used at Superfund and other waste disposal sites having complex geology and multiple contaminants of concern. The increased use of SVE has resulted in quality research that has removed much of the guess work from the design of such systems. Greater understanding of the physical and chemical processes involved in SVE has resulted in increasingly effective applications of the technology. Computer modeling studies can be used to determine which site-specific parameters affect the EROI and to show the effects that variations in contaminant concentration, contaminant volatility, extraction well flow rate, well construction, remediation time period, and surface covering have on the EROI of a SVE well. The results of such computer modeling studies are valuable to SVE system designers as they illustrate the importance of proper SVE system configuration. Design guidelines gathered from the modeling studies are useful to aid remediation system designers in developing effective full-scale SVE systems.
