Title: Three dimensional analysis for vibration of unidirectional composite parallelepiped

Abstract

Pressure vessels and piping structures made of composite materials are being increasingly used, primarily because of the large values of specific strength and stiffness which may be obtained in comparison with conventional materials, such as metals. The composite structure may be considered as an assemblage of plate and shell components, likewise in conventional metal structures, and the vibration of composite plates and shells constitutes an important area in applied mechanics. Here, a method of analysis is presented for solving the free vibration problem of a rectangular parallelepiped. The parallelepiped is made of an undirectionally reinforced fiber composite, which is modeled to have rectangular orthotropy. The method is based on the Ritz method, and accommodates arbitrary boundary conditions on the six faces by introducing the boundary indices into the displacement functions. Numerical results are given for the first several frequencies of isotropic and orthotropic parallelepipeds, including the cube, and are compared to the existing results by other theories.
