Neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) is a crucial test for lepton number violation. Observation of this process would have fundamental implications for neutrino physics, theories beyond the Standard Model and cosmology. Focusing on so-called short-range operators of 0νββ and their potential interplay with the standard light Majorana neutrino exchange, we present the first complete calculation of the relevant nuclear matrix elements, performed within the interacting boson model (IBM-2). Furthermore, we calculate the relevant phase space factors using exact Dirac electron wave functions, taking into account the finite nuclear size and screening by the electron cloud. Direct evidence for octupole deformation in ${}^{146}{Ba}$ and the origin of large $E 1$ moment variations in reflection-asymmetric nuclei

Despite the more than one order of magnitude difference between the measured dipole moments in ¹⁴⁴Ba and ¹⁴⁶Ba, the strength of the octupole correlations in ¹⁴⁶Ba have been determined to be as strong as that in ¹⁴⁴Ba with a similar value of B(E3; 3^- → 0⁺) ( 48 W.u.). The new results not only establish unambiguously the presence of a region of octupole deformation centered on these neutron-rich Ba isotopes, but also manifest the dependence of the electric dipole moments on the occupancy of different neutron orbitals in nuclei with enhanced octupole strength, as revealed by fully microscopic calculations.
