Title: Effect of coatings in HSLA steel weld metal cold cracking

Conference ·
OSTI ID:115446

The welding of steels protected by painting, during the manufacturing process, is a common procedure in off-shore, naval, and some industrial construction. The removal of the coating before welding, according the normalized specifications, produce an additional work which is very onerous to the process. The mechanical properties of welds on coated steels have been studied by several researchers all over the world and they showed that there are no significant differences compared to that on coated steels. This work proposes a systematic study of the influence of coating paints on high-strength, low-alloy (HSLA) steel weld cold cracking. The self-restraint Tekken test is used to investigate the cracks, due its high versatility, facility to quantify the cracks, and low cost. Surface cracks were not found in the test weld beads in both visual and stereoscopic-assisted inspections. The weld joints on uncoated and intermediate thickness surfaces have presented the most number of section cracks. The section cracks were also analyzed in relation to the percentage size and source. independent of the surface coating condition, it was observed that te cracks generally arise at the weld root and then propagate to the weld or base metal in both, intergranular or transgranular way without a specific standard. The experimental analysis of the weld beads in this work led to the following main conclusions: (1) The cracks preferentially arise at the weld root, due its higher stress level and after propagate to another region in both intergranular and transgranular ways, for any surface coating condition. (2) The several types of anticorrosion surface coatings used in the tests did not significantly affect the SAR-50-B steel cold cracking susceptibility, for those experimental conditions.
