Origin of NORM in Ras Budran oil field
The Ras Budran (R/B) field lies in the Gulf of Suez and consists of a massive Nubian Sandstone which is compartmentalized by partially sealing major faults. The field is undersaturated and production is maintained by gas-lifted wells with the field under secondary water flooding and limited aquifer drive. Down-hole scale formation was recognized following the breakthrough of water at the well-bore. Initially diagnosed as calcium carbonate scaling, later observation, following breakthrough of injected sea-water, revealed deposits calcium, barium and strontium sulphates. Plugging or partial plugging of the production strings was the most common evidence for scale deposition either in the tubing and/or perforations. During PLT and TDT logging the plugged intervals exhibit high Gamma ray, also the retrieved scales from the tubing were having some Low Specific Activity (LSA) radioactive material.
