A combined soil vapor and groundwater extraction system has been operating at the Waverly, Nebraska, National Priorities List site for the past six years. Combined soil gas concentrations of carbon tetrachloride and chloroform were about 40,000 {micro}g/m{sup 3} at system startup. For the past two years, soil gas concentrations have ranged from about 2 to 900 {micro}g/m{sup 3}. The action level specified in the Record of Decision for system closure is 6.5 {micro}g/m{sup 3} for total carbon tetrachloride and chloroform. To evaluate the future performance of the vapor extraction system (VES) in achieving compliance with the action levels, soil gas sampling methods have been modified, and the system has been operated both continuously and with periods of temporary shutdown. Use of a Carbotrap sampling medium and a sampling flow rate sufficient to overcome the subsurface flow regime imposed by the VES eliminated large variations observed in soil gas contaminant concentrations. During a VES shutdown of two to six months, contaminant concentrations in the soil gas increased. These concentrations decreased within about 24 hr of restarting to the levels observed during continuous operation of the system. The future contaminant flux to groundwater from the source area can be estimated from the steady-state contaminant concentrations measured during VES operation and shutdown and the estimated recharge rates.
