The focus of the research described in this dissertation is the use of mass spectrometric techniques to investigate the gas phase chemistry of metal complexes, specifically the role of ligation in the reactivity and thermodynamics of metal ions. This dissertation is divided into two parts; the first part involves the design and construction of a 3 Tesla External Source Quadrupole Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometer (Q-FTMS) for ion-molecule reactions and analysis. Experiments performed using this instrument are described, including examples of ion-molecule reactions of externally produced ions using an FTMS. Applications involving analysis, reactions and photodissociation of metal and metal containing ions ranging from bare metal ions to substituted metalloporphhyrins are discussed. The second part of this dissertation involves the formation of dications by charge stripping mass spectrometry of bare and ligated metal ions produced by Fast Atom Bombardment. In these experiments, effects of ligation on transition, rare earth and alkaline earth metal ions in some simple complexes with oxygen, hydroxyl and halide ligands were examined. Bond dissociation energies for several doubly charged complexes such as Mo{sup 2+}, MOH{sup 2+} and MCl{sup 2+} have been obtained. The charge stripping experiments were performed on a double sector mass spectrometer at the Facility for Advanced Instrumentation at the University of California at Davis.
