The velocity profile is an important parameter in regarding frictional phenomena between solid particles and pipe wall, critical deposit velocity, and sorting mechanism near the bed in settling slurry flows in a horizontal pipe. The authors propose in this paper an analytical model which could be used for the calculation of the velocity profiles in practical pipeline design. Based on the hypothesis that stayed slurry flow would be produced through the encounter of water flow to stationary suspended solid particles with a fixed distribution of concentration in water, the model has been derived by the analysis of the change in momentums both of solid particles and water with item. This model allows pipeline design engineers to easily calculate velocity profiles of settling slurry flow with a personal computer. Predictions from the model are compared with experimental results obtained from published papers, and are verified to be reliable.
