Use of three-winding step-up transformer in the cogeneration power plant from technical and economical consideration

Using two individual generator step-up transformers for a gas turbine generator and a steam turbine generator in a cogeneration power plant is a common practice and offers good control during operations. A single three-winding transformer with two low side windings, one for the gas turbine generator and another for the steam turbine generator, is a feasible option to replace two transformers. The advantage of the three-winding transformer is economy. The price of the three-winding transformer is considerably lower than the sum price of two two-winding transformers and their associated high voltage switchyard interfaces. A savings of 20 percent or more in the transformer cost is possible. Space savings is another advantage. In a three-winding transformer, however, some technical challenges are encountered. Namely, the potential for overheating in a secondary winding, if it is under a no-load condition when the other secondary winding is fully loaded.
