ScienceLab unifies the Department of Energy's science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education content, making it easier than ever to find STEM education resources offered by DOE.
While the website is geared toward students, educators may use it to support their students' needs. Users can go to ScienceLab and conveniently find via a single query and use (for free) the STEM education offerings of DOE. Resources include internships and career opportunities, information about science contests and fairs, activities and experiments, reputable science information to help with school assignments and learning, ways to visit laboratories, and answers to thousands of science questions.
Unlike many portals, ScienceLab resources are not collected into a data warehouse; rather the website works much like Google© in that it "crawls" and indexes web pages making its full text searchable by key words. Further, each resource is then tagged so that users can narrow their broad search by resource type and grade.
While the website and its features are free to anyone who can access the web, users must sign up to comment and rate materials (see the registration guidelines and form for details). Not only can users search by a single query, they can:
Enhancing American competitiveness in science and technology by improving STEM education is a U.S. priority. In response to the 2007 America COMPETES Act, the Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) has made available web-based kindergarten through high school STEM education resources relating to the science and energy mission of the Department.
Further, in support of open government, interactive features have been integrated to give users opportunities to participate and interact with other students about their ideas and thoughts concerning the resources themselves. This type of sharing is believed to facilitate collaboration and interaction among students. Users can also rate resources, a capability proven to be useful in the social networking age.
The ScienceLab website is hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI).
