Title: The mass spectra, hierarchy and cosmology of B-L MSSM heterotic compactifications

Abstract

The matter spectrum of the MSSM, including three right-handed neutrino supermultiplets and one pair of Higgs-Higgs conjugate superfields, can be obtained by compactifying the E₈ x E₈ heterotic string and M-theory on Calabi-Yau manifolds with specific SU(4) vector bundles. These theories have the standard model gauge group augmented by an additional gauged U(1)_B-L. Their minimal content requires that the B-L gauge symmetry be spontaneously broken by a vacuum expectation value of at least one right-handed neutrino. In previous papers, we presented the results of a quasi-analytic renormalization group analysis showing that B-L gauge symmetry is indeed radiatively broken with an appropriate B-L/electroweak hierarchy. In this paper, we extend these results by 1) enlarging the initial parameter space and 2) explicitly calculating all renormalization group equations numerically. The regions of the initial parameter space leading to realistic vacua are presented and the B-L/electroweak hierarchy computed over these regimes. At representative points, the mass spectrum for all particles and Higgs fields is calculated and shown to be consistent with present experimental bounds. Some fundamental phenomenological signatures of a non-zero right-handed neutrino expectation value are discussed, particularly the cosmology and proton lifetime arising from induced lepton and baryon number violating interactions.

Within the context of the E8 x E8 heterotic superstring compactified on a smooth Calabi-Yau threefold with an SU(4) gauge instanton, we show the existence of simple, realistic N = 1 supersymmetric vacua that are compatible with low energy particle physics. The observable sector of these vacua has gauge group SU(3)C x SU(2)L x U(1)Y x U(1)B-L, three families of quarks and leptons, each with an additional right-handed neutrino, two Higgs-Higgs conjugate pairs, a small number of uncharged moduli and no exotic matter.

The authors discuss symmetry breaking and phenomenological aspects of rank 6 effective models in 4 dimensions, suggested by Calabi-Yau compactification of the heterotic E/sub 8/ x E/sub 8/ superstring, which have gauge group SU(3)/sub C/ x SU(2)/sub L/ x SU(2) x U(1)'. Electroweak vacuum stability in classically conformal B - L extension of the standard model

Here, we consider the minimal U(1) _{B - L} extension of the standard model (SM) with the classically conformal invariance, where an anomaly-free U(1) _{B - L} gauge symme- try is introduced along with three generations of right-handed neutrinos and a U(1) _{B - L} Higgs field. Because of the classi- cally conformal symmetry, all dimensional parameters are forbidden. Gauge hierarchy from electroweak vacuum metastability

We consider the possibility that the gauge hierarchy is a byproduct of the metastability of the electroweak vacuum, i.e., that whatever mechanism is responsible for the latter also sets the running Higgs mass to a value smaller than its natural value by many orders of magnitude. We find that the metastability of the electroweak vacuum, together with the requirement that such a nontrivial vacuum exists, requires the Higgs mass to be smaller than the instability scale by around 1 order of magnitude. While this bound is quite weak in the Standard Model (SM), as the instability scale is ~10¹¹ GeV, simple and well-motivated extensions of the SM significantly tighten the bound by lowering the instability scale. The minimal SUSY B - L model: simultaneous Wilson lines and string thresholds

In previous work, we presented a statistical scan over the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters of the minimal SUSY B - L model. For specificity of calculation, unification of the gauge parameters was enforced by allowing the two Z₃×Z₃ Wilson lines to have mass scales separated by approximately an order of magnitude. This introduced an additional “left-right” sector below the unification scale.
